ELEVEN

“You cannot be serious. Tia and I are risking our lives to do the job you gave us.” Elijah stood in front of Mikko, desperately wanting to grab the smug creep’s throat and shake some sense into him. Mikko’s threat to remove he and Tia from their promotions infuriated Elijah. Only the reminder that they had to complete the Op kept him from following through with that move.

“Don’t know.” Mikko gave an exaggerated sigh and shook his head. “You two find a lot of trouble.”

“You told me there’s a bull’s-eye painted on my back,” Elijah reminded the man. “And you made a public show the other night at the hideout by telling everyone that Tia and I are replacing Vito and Orlando.”

Mikko’s head shot up and he glared at Elijah. “Nobody replaces Vito and Orlando.”

Elijah raised his hands in surrender. “It’s a figure of speech.”

“Uh-huh,” Mikko grunted. “I’m just sayin’ I’ve gotta rethink that promotion. What exactly happened to Tia?”

“Arsenic poisoning.”

Mikko exhaled an expletive, and Elijah wasn’t sure if it was from surprise or fear. He covered his mouth. “How?”

“Food delivery.” Elijah pierced Mikko with a hard stare, searching for any signs of deception. “That’s no coincidence. It was someone at the hideout.”

“Be careful throwing out accusations like that.”

“I’m only stating the obvious.”

“Dude, you’re flat out calling your brothers ‘dirty.’”

“Maybe.” Elijah couldn’t help but ponder the irony of that statement, considering the Kings were involved in criminal activity. “What if one of them wants to be your number two? Was anyone else in line?”

“They all want that job.” Mikko exhaled. “Never thought I’d lose Vito or Orlando.” He paced a path in front of the Mercedes. “Yeah. Yeah. That’s possible.”

Somehow, Elijah had to pry the drug deal information from Mikko. “Tia and I are still in. Committed. Whoever is trying to take us out is failing. We’re no quitters. You say when and where and we’re there.”

“When I find out, you will,” Mikko replied coolly.

So Mikko was clueless. Great. That meant they’d have a last-minute notification to share with the task force. How would the team prepare for the takedown? He needed to talk to Tiandra fast.

“Are we good?” Elijah asked.

“Yeah. I s’pose.”

“Cool. I gotta go back to Tia.” He gave a shrug. “You know how it is. She’ll be raging mad I’ve been gone so long.” Elijah rolled his eyes for effect.

Mikko chuckled. “Yeah, I get that.” He offered Elijah a fist bump. “Just remember, your allegiance is to me first. And if it isn’t...well...that’s a problem.”

My allegiance is to God alone. “Not an issue.”

Mikko tilted his head, giving him the appearance of a confused dog. Although Bosco’s intelligence far exceeded Mikko’s. Elijah suppressed a grin.

“Glad to hear it.” Mikko tapped out a cigarette. “How long you been with me now?”

Elijah’s pulse ratcheted, and his mind blanked. When had Graham and Tiandra gone undercover? Was this a test? “Since birth,” he answered, flippantly.

Mikko snorted and blew out a slow breath. “You two will stay at my house. Better if we’re all under the same roof when we get word the deal is going down.
